1. Shop smart

One of the easiest ways to reduce your food waste is to simply buy less of it. While buying in bulk may save money, it can also mean a lot more wastage. So plan your meals ahead of time and only buy what you need.

2. Control your portion sizes

A big part of shopping smarter is knowing how much food you should be eating – and not over-consuming. Buying and cooking just enough food for the correct portion size will not only help combat food wastage, it’ll help you cut the calories.

3. Get your storage right

Keep food edible for longer by making sure you’re storing your produce correctly. For example, potatoes and onions shouldn’t be refrigerated while bananas and avocados release a gas that can prematurely ripen produce like apples, so keep them separate.

4. De-clutter your fridge

Do you know exactly what’s in your fridge and when it needs to be eaten by? Most of us don’t, but if you keep your fridge clear of clutter (think condiments, drinks, etc.) you’ll have a much better understanding of what’s actually in there!

5. Use your leftovers

If you’ve cooked a little too much, don’t just chuck your leftovers away – make the most of them! Whether you eat them for lunch the next day, or create a whole different bubble-and-squeak-type meal, get inventive and just don’t let it go to waste.

6. Freeze your produce

If you’ve got fresh fruit and vegetables that are going past their best, why not freeze them? Leftover tomatoes can be pureed with herbs and frozen for a ready-made pasta sauce, while frozen bananas can be blended up into healthy ice cream.

7. Pack your own lunch

It’s always tempting to just grab a sandwich with co-workers when lunchtime rolls around. But not only will packing your own lunch help you save loads of money over time, it can also be a great way to make sure you use up all that food at home.

8. Get creative

Think outside the recipe book and add your own tweaks here and there to use up any food that’s going out of date. Whether you’re blending up scraps to make soup or chucking a few extra bits of fruit into your next cake, there’s always a creative option!
