How to get a good night’s sleep with hayfever

Don’t let pollen get in the way of a decent night’s sleep...

Spruce up your spring-time snoozing with these tips to ease hayfever symptoms at night.

1. Use an air purifier

One of the most effective ways of reducing your hayfever symptoms is by removing pollen from the air around you. Air purifiers trap spores and airborne triggers that can prevent you switching off for the night. We recommend looking out for units that work quietly to prevent noise disturbance.

2. Take a late night shower

If pollen is keeping you awake at night, there’s a good chance it’s lurking in your hair or on your skin, especially if you’ve spent much of the day outside. A shower before bed will rinse spores and any other allergens that might kep you awake. Soap with eucalyptus is great for clearing sinuses and soothing the throat, for added reassurance.

You may have thought about buying new bedding as part of a spring clean, but your new purchase could go a lot further than simply sprucing up a room. 4. Keep pets away

Remember to clean your pet’s bedding regularly as well as your own and banish your four-legged friends from the bedroom entirely if your hayfever symptoms start to flare up.

5. Take antihistamines at the right time

Although many antihistamines can only be taken once-a-day, it’s also important to time when they’re taken. Most hayfever symptoms are at their worst around midday so the most suitable time to take medication is in the morning. If sleeping is more of a concern and you tend to feel drowsy after taking antihistamines, you may want to take them later in the evening so they work overnight.
