Chelsea is our version of the bed you remember from a good hotel. Crisp white cotton, a fine stripe running the length of the cover, and a finish that still looks right after a hundred washes.
The stripe is woven in, not printed on. It is made on a dobby loom, which lifts small groups of warp threads independently so a pattern can be built into the structure of the cloth as it is woven. The stripe itself is a satin float, which is why it catches the light differently from the plain ground around it. All of which is a slower way to make fabric than running a plain weave. It is also the reason the stripe cannot fade, crack or wash away, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to come off. Run your hand across it and you can feel the stripe against the ground.
It is 100% cotton throughout, woven at 210 threads per square inch on a 134 x 72 construction with 40s yarn. The finished cloth weighs 118gsm, which is on the lighter side, and that is the point. A more open weave lets warm air move through the cover instead of trapping it against you, so the bed settles at a comfortable temperature rather than building up heat through the night. If you sleep warm, or share a bed with someone who does, this will suit you better than a dense 600 count sateen.
Cotton also handles moisture the way synthetics cannot. It takes up perspiration and releases it, so you wake less often feeling clammy.
The other thing hotels know about this cloth is that it launders well. Wash it at 40°C and it comes out of the machine ready to go back on the bed with very little fuss. It dries quickly. It takes a press cleanly if you like a sharp bed, and it looks perfectly good if you do not.
Two colours, both chosen to last longer than a season. White is the obvious one, and the one hotels use, because you can wash it hard and it always reads as clean. Taupe is the softer option, warmer under lamplight, and easier to live with if a bright white bed feels stark to you.
