What types of bed sheet does Belledorm sell?

Belledorm sells fitted sheets, flat sheets, pillowcases, and valance sheets. Fitted sheets have elasticated corners and are available in three depths: standard 30cm, extra deep 38cm for thicker mattresses, and ultra deep 46cm for the deepest mattresses and adjustable beds. Flat sheets sit between you and the duvet for a layered feel. All sheet types are available in fabrics from 200 thread count polycotton through to 1200 thread count Egyptian cotton, plus bamboo, jersey cotton, brushed cotton flannelette, Pima cotton, silk, and linen.

What size bed sheets do I need?

Measure the width of your mattress to confirm your bed size: 90cm is single, 120cm is small double (4ft), 135cm is double, 150cm is king, 180cm is super king. For fitted sheets, also measure the total depth of your mattress including any topper or protector - this determines whether you need a standard 30cm, extra deep 38cm, or ultra deep 46cm sheet. Belledorm also stocks specialist sizes including bunk bed, long single, IKEA Euro king, emperor, and large emperor.

What is the best fabric for bed sheets?

The best fabric depends on how you sleep. Polycotton (200 thread count) is lightweight, crease-resistant, and quick to dry - practical for everyday use. Cotton sateen at 300 or 600 thread count feels smoother and has a slight sheen. Egyptian cotton uses longer-staple fibres for a more consistent surface that softens with washing and resists pilling. Bamboo is naturally moisture-wicking and suits warm sleepers. Brushed cotton flannelette traps warmth for winter. Jersey cotton has a stretchy, T-shirt-soft feel.

What is the difference between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet?

A fitted sheet wraps around the mattress and is held in place by elasticated corners. It stays put overnight and is the standard base layer for most beds. A flat sheet is a single, unhemmed piece of fabric that sits between you and the duvet. It adds a layer of temperature regulation, protects the duvet cover from body oils and perspiration, and gives the bed a traditional, hotel-style finish. Many people use both together; some prefer just a fitted sheet and duvet.

How do I stop my fitted sheet from coming off the mattress?

The most common reason a fitted sheet pulls free is that the depth is wrong for the mattress. Measure the total depth of your mattress including any topper and choose a sheet with a box depth that matches - a 30cm sheet on a 28cm mattress will have very little fabric to tuck under and will slip off. Belledorm fitted sheets have fully elasticated edges (not just corner elastic), which keeps the sheet anchored more securely around all four sides of the mattress.

What thread count should I choose for bed sheets?

Thread count measures the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A 200 thread count polycotton or cotton percale has a crisp, cool feel suited to warm sleepers and everyday use. A 400 thread count cotton sateen is noticeably smoother. At 600 thread count and above, the fabric becomes denser and silkier, with a heavier drape. Above 1000 thread count, returns diminish - the weave type and fibre quality matter more than the number itself. Belledorm offers sheets from 200 to 1500 thread count across multiple fabric types.

How often should I wash my bed sheets?

Most sleep hygiene guidance recommends washing sheets every one to two weeks. During warmer months or if you perspire more at night, weekly washing is better for freshness and skin comfort. Belledorm cotton and polycotton sheets can be machine washed at 40°C on a standard cycle. Egyptian cotton and higher thread count sheets benefit from being removed from the dryer slightly damp and smoothed flat to reduce creasing.

Can I buy matching sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases?

Yes. Belledorm's sheet fabrics are available in matching duvet covers and pillowcases across most ranges, in the same thread count and colourway. This makes it straightforward to coordinate your entire bed from one fabric family. Bedding bundles are also available, which bring together a fitted sheet, duvet cover, and pillowcases in one order with a saving built in.

What is a flat sheet and do I actually need one?

A flat sheet is a lightweight rectangular layer that sits between you and your duvet. It adds comfort, helps regulate temperature, and keeps your duvet cover cleaner for longer, meaning you wash it less often. Many customers also use a flat sheet on its own during warmer months as a breathable alternative to a full duvet. It is a simple upgrade that makes a noticeable difference to your sleep routine.

What is the difference between a flat sheet and a fitted sheet?

A fitted sheet has elasticated corners that wrap securely around your mattress to create a smooth, stable base. A flat sheet lies loosely over the top and can be tucked in for a crisp, hotel-style finish. They work best together - the fitted sheet protects your mattress, the flat sheet adds comfort and reduces how often your duvet cover needs washing. Belledorm offers both in matching collections across the full range.

What size flat sheet do I need?

Choose the size that matches your mattress - Single, Double, King or Super King. Belledorm flat sheets are generously cut to allow for easy tucking on all sides. If you prefer a more dramatic drape or a hotel-style layered look with extra overhang, sizing up is a good option.

Which flat sheet fabric is best for hot sleepers?

Go for a percale weave in 100% cotton or Egyptian cotton - both are naturally breathable and get crisper with every wash. The 200TC or 400TC Egyptian cotton options are particularly popular with warm sleepers. Bamboo is also worth considering, it is naturally temperature regulating and exceptionally soft. Avoid sateen weaves if you tend to overheat, as the denser finish retains more warmth.

What is the difference between percale and sateen flat sheets?

Percale has a crisp, cool, matte finish - ideal if you prefer that fresh, hotel-style feel or tend to sleep warm. Sateen has a smooth, silky surface with a subtle sheen that feels more luxurious to the touch but retains slightly more warmth. If you are unsure which to choose, percale is the more versatile everyday option. Sateen suits those who prioritise a softer, more indulgent feel.

What is Pima cotton and how does it differ from Egyptian cotton?

Both are premium long-staple cottons known for exceptional softness and durability, but they come from different origins. Egyptian cotton is grown in the Nile Delta and is widely regarded as the gold standard for bedding. Pima cotton, grown primarily in the Americas, has similarly long fibres and offers a beautifully smooth feel with a natural sheen. Belledorm's 450TC Pima Cotton flat sheet is a great option if you want luxury quality at a slightly lower price point than the top-tier Egyptian cotton ranges.

Is a higher thread count always better quality?

Not necessarily. Thread count is one factor, but fibre quality and weave construction matter just as much. A well-made 200TC Egyptian cotton flat sheet will often feel better and last longer than a cheap 800TC sheet made from inferior cotton. Belledorm's range runs from 200TC up to 1200TC, the right choice depends on your preference for feel and budget, not just the number on the label.

Can I use a flat sheet on its own in summer instead of a duvet?

Absolutely - this is one of the most practical uses of a flat sheet. During warmer months, a lightweight cotton or bamboo flat sheet on its own provides just enough coverage without the heat of a duvet. The 200TC percale and bamboo options are particularly popular for summer use thanks to their breathability and cool, crisp feel against the skin.

How do I get a hotel-style finish with a flat sheet?

Spread the sheet evenly over your fitted sheet with equal overhang on each side. Tuck the foot end firmly under the mattress first, then fold each bottom corner into a neat hospital corner, pulling the side overhang taut and tucking it under in a diagonal fold. Belledorm's cotton and Egyptian cotton weaves are particularly well-suited to this thanks to their natural structure and drape.

Can I order a sample before committing to a full flat sheet?

Yes - most Belledorm flat sheets have a sample option available so you can feel the fabric quality before buying. Look for the "Sample Available" label on individual product listings throughout the range. It is a particularly useful option if you are choosing between thread counts or fabric types for the first time.

Is brushed flannelette worth it compared to regular cotton sheets?

Yes - if you're a cold sleeper or live in a cold climate, Belledorm's brushed flannelette offers exceptional value through warmth, comfort, and energy savings. Value comparison: Brushed Flannelette (Winter): Significantly warmer (up to 20% more heat retention) Exceptionally soft and cosy feel Reduces need for extra blankets or heating Gets softer with every wash 100% cotton breathability Seasonal use (autumn through spring) Regular Cotton (Year-round): Cooler, more breathable for summer Smooth, crisp feel (percale) or silky (sateen) Year-round versatility Lower maintenance Longer lifespan due to year-round rotation Cost-benefit analysis: Energy savings: Warmer bedding means lower heating bills - flannelette can reduce bedroom heating needs Comfort value: Better sleep quality in cold months justifies investment Lifespan: 4-6 years of seasonal use (only 6 months per year) means excellent longevity Seasonal rotation: Many customers own both - flannelette for winter, percale/sateen for summer Best for: Cold sleepers, unheated bedrooms, energy-conscious households, or anyone who prioritizes cosy warmth over year-round versatility. If you're temperature-neutral or warm, invest in quality percale or sateen instead.

How long does brushed flannelette bedding last?

Belledorm's brushed flannelette sheets typically last 4-6 years with proper care - comparable to quality cotton bedding despite the delicate brushed surface. Durability factors: 100% cotton construction - strong natural fibres resist tearing and thinning Double-brushed quality - both sides treated means even wear over time Proper care extends life - washing at 40°C and avoiding harsh chemicals preserves fibres Gets better with age - becomes softer whilst maintaining structural integrity Expected lifespan: First season: May shed some lint, gradually softening Years 1-3: Peak softness and performance Years 4-6: Still comfortable but may show slight thinning in high-friction areas Beyond 6 years: Possible with excellent care and rotation Wear indicators: Eventually the brushed surface may flatten in areas (where you sleep most), or fabric may thin. However, Belledorm's quality construction means flannelette maintains warmth and comfort far longer than budget alternatives that pill and roughen quickly. Care impact: Washing at lower temperatures (40°C not 90°C), avoiding bleach, and tumble drying on low heat can extend lifespan significantly. Rotating between multiple sets also reduces wear.

Is brushed flannelette suitable for sensitive skin and allergies?

Yes - Belledorm's 100% cotton brushed flannelette is naturally hypoallergenic and excellent for sensitive skin, though the brushed texture requires consideration for certain skin conditions. Hypoallergenic properties: 100% natural cotton - no synthetic fibres or chemical irritants Breathable construction - prevents moisture build-up that encourages allergens Washable at 60°C - hot enough to eliminate dust mites and allergens when needed Chemical-free comfort - pure cotton without harsh finishing treatments Moisture-wicking - keeps skin dry, reducing irritation Sensitive skin considerations: Good for: Dry skin - the soft, fuzzy texture is gentle and non-irritating Cold-induced skin sensitivity - warmth prevents temperature-related flare-ups General sensitivity - natural cotton is universally well-tolerated Consider carefully if you have: Severe eczema with open wounds - the textured surface may irritate (smooth sateen may be better) Extreme heat sensitivity - warmth could trigger flare-ups Allergy management: The brushed surface can trap dust and shed lint initially, so wash before first use and maintain regular washing (weekly recommended). The 100% cotton construction is naturally resistant to dust mites when washed properly, making it suitable for allergy sufferers who need warm winter bedding. Dermatologist perspective: Natural cotton is almost always recommended over synthetic alternatives. The soft brushed texture is gentler than rough, worn-out cotton, making quality flannelette a good choice for sensitive skin in cold weather.

Does brushed flannelette shrink after washing?

Yes - Belledorm's brushed flannelette may experience some shrinkage (typically 3-5%) after the first wash, which is normal for 100% cotton products, however our products are all pre shrunk. Shrinkage expectations: First wash: Most shrinkage occurs here (3-5% in length and width) Subsequent washes: Minimal additional shrinkage with proper care Fitted sheets: Elastic construction accommodates shrinkage whilst maintaining fit How to minimize shrinkage: Wash in cold to warm water (40°C maximum for first wash) Tumble dry on low heat - high heat increases shrinkage Remove while slightly damp and stretch gently back to shape Line drying minimizes shrinkage but may result in stiffer feel Why it happens: Natural cotton fibres relax and contract when exposed to water and heat for the first time. This is actually a quality indicator - 100% cotton will shrink slightly, whilst polyester blends maintain size because synthetic fibres don't shrink (but also don't breathe or feel as soft). Belledorm sizing: Our sheets are cut with shrinkage allowance in mind. After initial wash and shrinkage, fitted sheets will still fit standard UK mattress sizes comfortably. If you have an extra-deep mattress (over 35cm), consider this when selecting sizes.

What is brushed flannelette and why is it warmer than regular cotton?

Brushed flannelette is 100% cotton fabric that's been mechanically brushed on both sides to raise the fibres, creating a soft, fuzzy surface that traps warm air against your skin. Belledorm's brushed flannelette sheets are double-brushed, meaning both the top and bottom surfaces are treated for maximum warmth and softness. Why it's warmer: The brushing process lifts cotton fibres to create thousands of tiny air pockets that act as insulation, trapping body heat whilst remaining breathable. This makes flannelette significantly warmer than smooth cotton sheets (up to 20% more heat retention) without the sweaty, suffocating feel of synthetic materials. The science: Unlike fleece or polyester that trap moisture, Belledorm's 100% cotton flannelette wicks perspiration away whilst maintaining warmth. You stay cosy without overheating - the natural cotton breathes, preventing that clammy feeling you get with synthetic winter bedding. Best for: Cold sleepers, winter months, unheated bedrooms, or anyone who loves that warm, snuggly feeling of climbing into a cosy bed on a cold night.

Is brushed cotton the same as flannelette or flannel?

Yes - brushed cotton, flannelette, and flannel refer to the same type of fabric in UK bedding terminology. Belledorm's brushed flannelette is 100% brushed cotton. Terminology clarification: Flannelette (UK term) - brushed cotton fabric, lighter weight Flannel (US term) - same as flannelette, sometimes heavier weight Brushed cotton - descriptive term for the manufacturing process All mean: 100% cotton fabric that's been mechanically brushed to raise soft fibres Belledorm's specification: Our brushed flannelette is double-brushed on both sides, creating that signature soft, fuzzy texture that gets even softer with washing. The 100% cotton construction ensures breathability and durability that synthetic "fleece" alternatives can't match. Quality indicator: Look for "100% cotton" and "double-brushed" - these specifications ensure genuine flannelette quality. Cheaper versions may be single-brushed (one side only) or blended with polyester, reducing softness and breathability.

Does brushed flannelette sleep too hot or is it only for winter?

Belledorm's brushed flannelette is designed for cold weather and winter months - it's intentionally warm and cosy, making it ideal for autumn through spring in the UK. Temperature suitability: Perfect for: October through April in most UK homes Ideal conditions: Unheated bedrooms, cold sleepers, winter nights Too warm for: Hot summer nights or naturally warm sleepers in heated rooms Why it stays comfortable: Despite being warm, the 100% cotton construction remains breathable and moisture-wicking. Unlike synthetic fleece that can make you sweaty and clammy, Belledorm's flannelette regulates moisture whilst providing insulation. You stay warm without that suffocating, overheated feeling. Seasonal strategy: Many customers switch to flannelette in autumn/winter and lighter cotton or percale in spring/summer. The natural cotton breathability means you won't overheat as drastically as with synthetic alternatives if temperatures fluctuate. Best for: Cold sleepers year-round, or seasonal use (October-April) for temperature-neutral sleepers. If you're a hot sleeper or keep your bedroom above 20°C, consider lighter cotton options like percale or sateen.

How do you wash brushed flannelette to keep it soft?

Belledorm's brushed flannelette actually gets softer with proper washing - the key is gentle care that preserves the raised fibres whilst maintaining fabric integrity. Washing instructions: First wash: Wash before use at 40°C to remove manufacturing residue and fluff up fibres Regular washing: Machine wash at 40°C (60°C for deep cleaning if needed) Detergent: Use mild liquid detergent; avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or biological detergents Fabric softener: NOT necessary and can coat fibres, reducing absorbency - flannelette is naturally soft Load size: Don't overload - sheets need room to move and fluff properly Lint management: Expect some lint shedding in first 2-3 washes (normal for brushed cotton) Drying instructions: Tumble dry: Low to medium heat - this actually helps fluff the brushed fibres Line dry: Acceptable but tumble drying produces softer results for flannelette Shake out: Give sheets a good shake before drying to separate fibres Pro tips: Wash flannelette separately from smooth fabrics (prevents pilling) Clean your lint filter after every flannelette load The brushed surface improves with age - expect maximum softness after 5-10 washes
