Stuck working from home? Boost your motivation by transforming your bedroom into a productive working space with these 5 top tips.
1. Separate your workspace
However tempting it might be to work from bed, you’ll likely find it far easier to stay on-task if you separate your work from your living space. Setting up a desk on the other side of your room can help to put you in an “office” mindset, avoid distractions, and allow you to leave work behind at the end of the day.
2. Get the lighting right
Working in a dark or poorly-lit environment can have a negative effect on your mood, making it harder to stay motivated. Set up your desk in a space with plenty of natural light, while making sure your screens aren’t reflecting any glare. For greyer days or later working evenings, check the bulbs in your overhead lights and keep a desk lamp handy. Remember, strained eyes can lead to headaches and migraines.
3. Test the WiFi
There’s nothing more irritating than a dodgy internet connection, especially when you’re trying to make conference calls over video. Test the WiFi in different spaces around your room to find the best connection spot. If you need to, it might be worth investing in a booster box or plugging your device directly into the wall to help guarantee your signal doesn’t drop mid-meeting.
4. Organise your desk
Before settling into your workspace, make sure you’ve got everything you need. Set up your sockets, plug in the printer and make sure you’ve got pens, pencils, notepads and anything else you may need to work within easy reach. Pinboards are another great way to keep you organised, making it easier to see what you’d got lined up for your week and giving you a sense of satisfaction as you visibly clear your workload.
5. Make it comfortable
Comfort is key if you’re planning to spend extended periods sat in one place. Find the most comfortable chair in the house, or even better, invest in an office chair with adjustable height and recliner settings. Make sure your computer screen is at eye level to save you hunching over as you work – a bad back can cause long-term discomfort if you don’t look after your posture.
