Sleeptember: Better Sleep Starts in the Bed

In partnership with The Sleep Charity

It’s Sleeptember – our charity partner, The Sleep Charity’s, official awareness month and the theme this year is the importance of beds and bedding with it’s Better Sleep Starts Here campaign.

Of course, we’re massively onboard with this campaign being experts in bedding so joined up with The Sleep Charity team to give you lots of information and advice on getting the best out of your bed.

Not All Bedding Is Created Equal

Your choice of bedding can either support deep, restorative sleep - or work against it. Materials that trap heat or don’t breathe well can lead to overheating or a clammy feeling. Conversely, bedding that’s too light might leave you chilled by midnight. These physical discomforts don’t just make it harder to fall asleep, they can interrupt crucial sleep stages like REM and deep sleep, affecting memory, mood, and even immune function.

Thermoregulating and moisture-wicking fabrics such as cotton or bamboo blends help manage temperature and wick away sweat, keeping you dry and comfortable through the night. As we explored in our recent fabrics blog, natural fibres are often superior to synthetic ones for maintaining that ideal ‘just right’ sleep temperature.

Thread Count: Myth vs. Meaning

When shopping for bedding, many are drawn to high thread counts, assuming more threads equals better comfort. But that’s not always the case. A thread count over 400 doesn’t necessarily mean better quality - it depends on the type of cotton and how it’s woven. For example, a 300 thread count Egyptian cotton sheet often outperforms higher counts made from lower-grade fibres. Belledorm prioritises the feel, breathability, and durability of our fabrics, not just the numbers.

Beyond the Bed: Sleep Hygiene Tips

Good sleep hygiene extends beyond your sheets. Establish a calming bedtime routine - think warm bath, gentle stretching, reading by soft light. These rituals signal your body that it’s time to unwind. And once you’re relaxed, slipping into crisp cotton sheets or a smooth sateen duvet cover completes the transition into sleep mode.

Layering for Better Sleep: Build Your Bed Like a Sleep Sanctuary

Layering your bed is not just an aesthetic choice - it’s a strategy for better sleep. Mattress toppers add support and comfort, while different duvet tog ratings let you adjust warmth for the season. In warmer months, opt for a 4.5 tog duvet; as autumn sets in, layering with a 10.5 tog or adding a cotton throw gives you the flexibility to stay cosy without overheating.

Mix in cushions and throws not just for style, but for function - layering allows you to fine-tune your sleep environment throughout the night. Flexibility is key to staying asleep longer and waking up refreshed.

Looking to transition your sleep sanctuary for autumn? Choose breathable, eco-friendly bed linen that helps regulate temperature as nights grow cooler. Belledorm offers a variety of thoughtful options, from natural fibres to season-ready duvets, helping you layer smartly for comfort and sustainability.

Sleep Smarter This Sleeptember

As The Sleep Charity reminds us, great sleep starts with awareness. The wrong bedding can interrupt your natural sleep cycles, while the right environment helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. So this Sleeptember, consider not just how you sleep, but where. Better Sleep Starts Here.
